Who can apply?
CChem is for those working in the chemical sciences who have:
- membership of the ÂÜÀòÉç (MRSC or FRSC)
- a Master's-level (M-level) qualification in the chemical sciences, or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience
- evidence that you meet the CChem attributes
- a commitment to continuing your professional development
What does it cost?
- The application fee is £100
- The annual retention fee is £34 per year, paid with your membership renewal

How to apply

You'll be asked to demonstrate that you have developed a breadth and depth of chemical science knowledge, along with the necessary supporting transferable skills.
Before you start, make sure you have:
✓ an up-to-date CV – you'll need to submit this when registering
✓ the name of your mentor to support you in your application and, if your mentor is not familiar with your work, the name of a referee
Need help finding a mentor? Get in touch and we'll help you identify a mentor from within your workplace or network, or from our CChem mentor pool.
Work with your mentor to identify which of the 14 attributes you can provide evidence for. Then, identify and plan how you can develop evidence against the attributes that you don’t have evidence for.
You'll be asked to submit written statements detailing how you have met the 14 professional attributes, along with a portfolio of primary evidence.

We'll review your application to make sure you've provided everything that we need, and work with you to address any gaps.
Your application (the 14 written statements, your mentor’s comments, and your portfolio of evidence) will be assessed by two independent CChem assessors.

Maintaining your CChem status
Keeping your knowledge and skills up to date is essential in a fast-changing world. And, like most professional awards, it's a mandatory requirement to commit to continuing professional development (CPD) to maintain your CChem status. We offer members a free CPD recording tool to make this easier.
You may be selected for revalidation or you may choose to revalidate. If you are selected for revalidation, you'll be asked to submit a report describing:
- your CPD plans
- your relevant learning activities, linked to the 14 attributes, in three of the following five areas:
- work-based learning (for example, supervising staff/students, reflective practice)
- professional activity (involvement in a professional body, mentoring)
- formal/educational (writing articles/papers, further education)
- self-directed learning (reading journals, reviewing books/articles
- other (voluntary work, public service)
When you complete the revalidation process, you'll have the opportunity to request a tailored one-to-one consultation with our careers team to help you meet your development goals.

Work with your mentor to identify where you can meet the attributes with existing evidence or through your current role

✓ Reflect on your development
Discuss your evidence with your mentor and reflect on its suitability for CChem
✓ Gather evidence
Identify suitable evidence to support your statements
✓ Submit your evidence
Submit your written statements about 14 professional attributes and portfolio of evidence. Your mentor will then add their comments
✓ Review
We'll review your submission and let you know if you need to make any changes
✓ Peer-review
After a final check by us, we'll send your submission to our independent CChem assessors for final review
