Introduction
Behind the scenes at the National Gallery there is a team of scientists who work to not only preserve the paintings on display, but to unlock the mysteries of the paints and pigments that the artists used to create their spectacular works. Guided by a Gallery educator, students will consider why transition metal complexes and compounds are important to artists. The workshop also explores paintings as objects and analyses the physical and chemical changes they go through, as well as investigating the National Gallery Scientists study these changes and the chemical processes involved.
