Next steps for widening participation policy and the changing shape of Higher Education admissions

Introduction
Timed to follow the removal of the student numbers cap in September 2015, this seminar will examine its impact on the university admissions system as well as the latest policies designed to widen participation in Higher Education.

Delegates will discuss how universities and the admissions system more widely are responding to the forthcoming decoupling of AS and A-levels - also due in September 2015 and which is expected to result in a return to universities basing their admissions on predicted grades - and in light of recent trends towards both more universities offering unconditional offers and more students entering the 'clearing' system. Further sessions will consider impending changes to UCAS which will allow UK students to apply to approved overseas universities directly through the service - as well as the potential for more comprehensive change, including the possibility of moving to a post-qualification application (PQA) system.

The seminar will also examine current social mobility issues in Higher Education, including the increasing gap between the number of female and male undergraduates, as well as progress of existing schemes to widen participation, such as HEFCE’s recently launched National Networks for Collaborative Outreach.

We are delighted that Clair Murphy, Senior Higher Education Policy Advisor, HEFCE; Jenny Hällen Hedberg, Head of International Relations, University of Luxembourg and Helen Thorne, Director of External Relations, UCAS have agreed to deliver keynote addresses at this seminar.

At this early stage Janet Graham, Director, SPA (Supporting Professionalism in Admissions); Peter Hamilton, Headmaster, The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Hertfordshire; Hannah Morrish, Higher Education Community Manager, The Student Room; Angela Nartey, Policy Officer, University and College Union; Dr Robin Shields, Senior Lecturer, Higher Education Management, University of Bath and Co-author, Changing patterns in vocational entry qualifications, student support and outcomes in undergraduate degree programmes; Dr Shaun Speed, Senior Lecturer in Nurse Education and Academic Lead for Widening Participation, Faculty of Medical and Human Sciences, University of Manchester; Professor John Storan, Principal, Action on Access and Director of Continuum, the Centre for Widening Participation Policy Studies, University of East London and Paul Teulon, Director of Admissions, King's College London have also agreed to speak.

Baroness Sharp of Guildford, Member, House of Lords Social Mobility Committee, has kindly agreed to chair a session at this seminar.
