IYPT 2019 Celebrating the Periodic Table and Atomic Spectroscopy

4 November 2019 12:00-19:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
This year has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table. For the Atomic Spectroscopy community, the periodic table represents our analytical world and understanding the fundamentals of the elements has allowed the development of this large and varied field. To celebrate this, the Atomic Spectroscopy Group is holding a special symposium at Burlington House with keynote speakers covering the breadth of the atomic spectroscopy and an informal drinks reception, providing an opportunity for networking in a relaxed environment. We are also pleased to announce the RSC IYPT Periodic Table Photo Booth will be at the event!

We look forward to welcoming you to Burlington House for an afternoon celebrating IYPT and atomic spectroscopy along with a chance to interact, discuss and take a selfie!

Speakers

Eduardo Bolea Fernandez, University of Ghent.
"Exploring the limits of tandem ICP-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS): an overview"
Winner of the 2018 IUPAC-SOLVAY international award for young chemists, Eduardo is working within Prof Vanhaecke’s research group which focuses on the determination, speciation and isotopic analysis of elements using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The group studies fundamentally-oriented aspects of the technique and develops methods for solving challenging scientific problems covering a multitude of interdisciplinary applications.

Sally Spankie, IOM Edinburgh
"Challenges of undertaking an European wide biomonitoring measurement campaign for metals"

Sarah Hill, LGC

"Potatoes, Milk and Breast Implants: The Story of Iodine and Atomic Spectroscopy"

Lizzie Griffin, University of Aberdeen
"The Periodic Table of Alzheimer's: Using Atomic Spectroscopy to Study Disease Models"

Elliott Hamilton, BGS
“Hexavalent Chromium in Zambian Soils using Speciated Isotope Dilution Mass Spectrometry; Implications for Staple Crops”

The seminar will run from 13.00 - 17.00 and will be followed by a drinks reception to enable a chance to mix with the speakers, meet new people and claim your element at the IYPT photo booth!
