Patent Masterclass for Chemists and Biologists

14 May 2025 13:00 - 15 May 2025 13:00, United Kingdom

Introduction
R&D chemists, biologists and engineers involved in new product, service or process development should have a fundamental understanding of which intellectual property (IP) rights are key to their technology and business.  By securing legal protection for their creative activities, such as patent protection, they can prevent competitors from copying their inventions and so maximise the return on their investment.

While this course focuses largely on patents, other IP rights which can be used to protect the output of research are also covered, such as trade secrets, copyright and designs.

Delegates will learn how to identifiy inventions, assess patentablity, and what is required to draft, file and prosecute a patent application to grant.

The course will be given by webinar over 2 days:

Day 1 provides an overview of the key IP rights, the patenting process, how to read patents and interpret claims, and the ownership of IP rights;

Day 2 drills down into the detail of how to identify inventions, search the patent databases for relevant 'prior art', distinguish inventions from the prior art, and then draft, file and prosecute the patent application before the national and regional Intelllectual Property /Patent Offices such as the UK Intellectual Property Office and the European Patent Office.
