Abstract: Painted in June 1889, Olive Trees by Vincent van Gogh is one of a series of 15 paintings tackling this distinctive motif and produced during the artist’s year-long stay at the asylum of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence. Over a three-year period, an international team of curators, conservators and conservation scientists examined each painting of this series in detail. Analysing all aspects of van Gogh’s materials and technique, this ground-breaking project culminated in an exhibition that took place in the Dallas Museum of Art, Texas and the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam across 2021-2022. Senior Paintings Conservator, Lesley Stevenson will discuss the findings of the research specifically in relation to the Edinburgh Olive Trees – one of the most popular paintings in the Scottish National Gallery collection.
This event is kindly sponsored by ScotCHEM and the ÂÜÀòÉç Edinburgh and South East Scotland Local Section.
