Mixed-anion or heteroanion compounds are single-phase materials in which the cations are bonded to more than just one kind of anion. By controlling the anion composition, structural, electric, optical, thermal, electrochemical, and catalytic properties can be effectively modified. Such materials are currently attracting increasing attention as tunable functional materials in applications ranging from electronics and optics to catalysis and energy conversion, and beyond. For various applications and research targets, the mixed-anion materials are synthesised in powder, single-crystal and thin-film forms via diverse synthesis approaches, often supported by advanced theoretical calculations.

The possible areas of interest for this collection include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Oxynitrides and oxyhalides for batteries
• Mixed chalcogenides and oxychalcogenides for thermoelectrics
• Oxyhalides and oxypnictides for superconductivity
• Various mixed-anion compounds for (photo)catalysis
• Oxynitrides and oxyhalides for photoluminescence
• Oxynitrides and oxycarbides for microelectronics
• Inorganic compounds incorporating molecular anions (with [SCN]^-, [NCN]^2-, [BH₄]^-, [S₂]^2- etc.)

All types of manuscript – communications, full papers and review-type articles – will be considered for publication. The manuscript should be prepared according to our article guidelines. Following our peer-review process, we will publish accepted articles online in a citeable form as soon as they are ready, with compilation of the complete collection in mid-2025.

The Brazilian Meeting on Inorganic Chemistry (BMIC), supported by The Brazilian Chemical Society, has a significant history in promoting research and collaboration among chemists. This bi-annual conference serves as a platform for presenting findings and discussing advancements in inorganic chemistry, reflecting its evolution in Brazil. Since its inception decades ago, BMIC has broadened its scope, now held alongside the Brazilian Meeting on Rare Earths (BMRE) and the Workshop on Theoretical Bioinorganic Chemistry (WTBC).

This special issue of Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers is dedicated to commemorating the XXI BMIC / X BMRE / III WTBC, facilitating discussions on the latest developments in thematic areas such as biological inorganic chemistry, organometallics, rare-earths, supramolecular chemistry, photochemistry, inorganic electrochemistry, materials chemistry, and catalysis.

Both research and review articles will be considered for this themed collection. All submissions will be subject to an initial assessment by the Editorial Office and, if suitable for the journal, they will be subject to rigorous peer review to meet the usual high standards of Inorganic Chemistry Frontiers.

The Emerging Investigator Series has an overall objective to showcase significant research by newer voices from across the worldwide inorganic chemistry research community. We will consider additional applications and nominations on their own merit. Self-nominations are also strongly encouraged.

Both research articles and review articles are welcome to the series. Papers accepted for publication in the Emerging Investigator Series will be published in the earliest available issue and collated together in a dedicated Emerging Investigator Series page that will appear across Frontiers journals’ websites. All submissions to the Emerging Investigator Series will be subject to the journal’s high standards in peer review.

In order to be featured in the Emerging Investigator Series, contributors must:

• currently, be an independent research leader
• be the lead author (first author and/or corresponding author) of their article at the journal
• have either a) hold a PhD degree and be at the age of 40 or less in the year of submission, or b) received their PhD no earlier than 01 January of the year 12 years prior to the year of submission, or c) have no more than 12 years of post-PhD research experience on 01 January in the year of submission when taking into account any career breaks.

With the development of renewable energy, green electrosynthesis has ushered in new opportunities. The synthesis of organonitrogen compounds from inorganic nitrogen substances, such as N₂ or NO_x species, through the construction of C-N bonds is of great importance in various interdisciplinary fields including synthetic chemistry, energy, medicine, and agriculture. Traditionally, these compounds are produced through energy-intensive thermal catalytic processes, leading to significant exhaust gas emissions. Therefore, it is highly desirable to develop new synthetic methodologies under mild conditions. Electrosynthesis of C-N coupled organonitrogen using carbonyl compounds and inorganic nitrogen substances not only offers a green effective pathway towards an innovative synthesis approach for producing valuable chemicals like urea, amides, and amino acids but also promotes the discovery of the origins of life and mitigates environmental pollution, underscoring the immense potential and promising future of this research field.

This themed issue aims to gather cutting-edge research on electrocatalytic C-N coupling, promoting the advancement of sustainable, efficient, and eco-friendly technologies. Topics include but are not limited to:

• Recent advancements in the synthesis of high value-added C-N coupling products through electrocatalytic inorganic nitrogen sources conversion.
• Elucidation of the mechanism underlying C-N coupling reactions.
• Optimization of electrochemical reactor configurations for large-scale production of high-value products.
• Challenges in electrocatalytic C-N coupling to be addressed, along with potential future solutions including the utilization of renewable electrical energy, the selection of environmentally friendly solvents, the exploration of novel reactions, and the recycling of catalysts.
