Mr Michael John Lidgard CChem MRSC
9 May 1949 - 4 June 2015
Mike leaves a loving wife, Diane and devoted daughter, Helen.
Mike was one of the early founders of the local section of the RSC (蹤獲扦 - Southumbria), and would prove to be its most esteemed and dedicated servant. He served an incredible 36 years on the committee, including 26 years as Secretary and 3 years as Chairman. It is unlikely that this level of commitment and service will ever be matched.
Mike was a straight-talking man with good humour and professionalism. He instilled order in formal proceedings, whilst always helpful and supportive to other RSC members. He was influential in encouraging his peers to join the committee, and an enthusiastic volunteer organiser of local section events arranged for members, local schools and the wider community.
In his early years more than forty years ago, Mike worked at Laporte (now Cristal) at Stallingborough in the laboratories and in particular the microscopy department, whilst studying part-time at the Grimsby College.
By the early 80s, Mike had left industry and moved into teaching, initially at Wintringham School and ultimately spent many years at Franklin College, specialising in teaching physics.
Mike was a very keen long distance walker. He had an eclectic mix of interests including classic cars, photography and coin collecting. His love of France, its wine and his summer home were well known. His enthusiasm for the French way of life meant he and his wife would go there immediately after school term ended in the summer and remain there as long as possible until the winter term approached in September.
Mike was generous and thoughtful to others. He tirelessly promoted chemistry and science in general throughout his life, and persevered with these passions even when seriously ill in his final years.
He will be sadly missed and not forgotten.
