William “Bill” Collinson Orry - obituary BSc. MRSC

Bill sadly passed away on 21st March 2021 in Maidstone, Kent.
Bill was born on 22nd May 1939 to Albert and Freda Orry in Gillingham, Kent. Bill was a devoted and loving husband to Eve, brother to Geoff, father to Andrew, Jacqueline and Peter, and granddad to Andrea, George, Thomas, William, and Jacob.
Bill was an Analytical Chemist and a long serving and proud member of the . He had a lifelong passion for chemistry, as a boy he was always playing with his chemistry set in the kitchen and excelled in chemistry at the Chatham Technical School.
Bill was unable to attend university for financial reasons and so started his scientific career at Thorn Radio Valves and Tubes in Rochester Kent at the age of 18. He worked on the chemical analysis of materials used in the manufacture of cathode ray tubes and valves. He had a long and successful career as an industrial metallurgist and analytical chemist, applying atomic absorption spectroscopy and other techniques for the analysis of aluminium, magnesium, copper and steel alloys. He held many different chemistry laboratory management roles, in particular at Kent Alloys, Kent Aerospace Castings and Stangers Sciences.
Later in life, while working full time and bringing up three children, Bill completed his degree in Chemistry at the Open University.
An important part of Bill’s life was his Christian faith and he served in many roles at the Union Street Methodist Church in Maidstone. Bill was a keen hockey, badminton and tennis player and enjoyed attending Wimbledon whenever he could.
Bill will always live on in the hearts and minds of those who loved him.
