The annual Analytical Research Forum (ARF) is the premier Analytical Science meeting of the RSC and was held in 2008 at the Business School Esk Lecture Theatre at the University of Hull. The meeting is primarily for early-stage analytical science researchers (industrial scientists, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows) to present their latest results in the context of the wider analytical science community.
Following the success of the 2007 meeting, this meeting was attended by 175 delegates. The programme included oral presentations from students, medal winners and international leaders in the field.
The conference opened with a keynote lecture delivered by Professor Jan Eijkel of the University of Twente. Professor Eijkel's presentation continued the theme of the preceding workshop and the following student presentations concentrated on similar topics. Following the afternoon lectures, there was a poster session and drinks reception, before a barbecue at Thwaite Hall.
Tuesday's keynote lecture was sponsored by the Analytical Division's North Eastern region and was delivered by Ian Wilson of AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. The following student presentations were on themes of environment and separation. Over lunch, there was a second poster session, before the afternoon lectures which followed a biological theme, with the emphasis on sensing and biological probes. During Tuesday evening, delegates attended the conference dinner with entertainment from a live band.
On Wednesday, Sumeet Mahajan (University of Southampton) gave his lecture as winner of the Ronald Belcher Memorial Lectureship award. This session continued with student presentations on electroanalytical and spectrometry themes. Before the closing remarks, oral presentation prizes and poster presentation prizes were awarded.
During the 2008 meeting, networking took place through both interactive poster sessions and a lively social programme.

The SAC Silver Medal is awarded to a young scientist (under the age of 35), working in any field covering the practice and teaching of the analytical sciences.
The aim of the Ronald Belcher Memorial Lectureship is to commemorate the memory of the late Professor Belcher by encouraging young chemists to make a positive contribution to, and to take an active part in, the profession of Analytical Chemistry.

Networking
One of the valuable benefits of attending ARF is the opportunity to network with contemporary researchers who cover a wide range of analytical techniques and experience.During the 2008 meeting, networking took place through both interactive poster sessions and a lively social programme.
