Webinar: Understand the properties of polymer compounds by thermal analysis

23 June 2015

Introduction
Most applications with polymeric materials are not based on the neat polymer, but on mixtures of the polymer with other polymers and with other additives. Compounds are prepared during a compounding process, either by batch mixers or by continuous extrusion. Aim of compounding is to improve the properties of a neat polymer to enable it, to fulfill the requirements for an application. Such modifications can be separated in processing aid additives, stabilizers (thermal, UV, others), nucleation additives, flame retardants, colors, fillers and reinforcements. Thermal analysis allows for the characterization of a wide range of modified properties as a function of temperature, which is important for processing as well as for the final application. The webinar will first introduce important thermal analysis techniques that enable to characterize modified properties. In the second part of the webinar application examples of different polymer compounds will explain different effects, such as s melting and solidification by means of Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), decomposition behavior by means of thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), visco-elastic and mechanical properties by dynamic-mechanical analysis (DMA) or the thermal expansion by thermomechanical analysis (TMA).
