27 October 2015, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
Who is it for?
•Scientists considering a career in the pharmaceutical industry
•Academics who want to understand more about where medicines come from
•People who interact with scientists working in the drug discovery arena e.g. administrators, project managers, conference organisers, those working in science policy and education
•Teachers who want to update their knowledge in this area
•Students at all stages of their career
•Anyone who wants to know more about the principles of drug discovery.

Course outline

The course will cover drug discovery to phase 1 clinical trials and so will focus on drug discovery rather than drug development.

Following an introductory session on history and key principles of drug discovery the rest of the day will involve interaction sessions discussing the following concepts:

•Once you think you have a good idea for a new drug - how do you sell the idea to senior management?
•How good is your idea - what evidence is needed? Why is it needed?
•What properties of the molecule are needed for your new drug?
•How will you discover the molecule - what technology and screen sequence will you use?
•How do you know the molecule is safe to administer to humans?
•So you have a good molecule - how do we get to trial it in humans?
•If the drug fails in a phase 1 clinical trial- will you know why (biomarkers)?
