The Schools Analyst Competition is an annual national competition coordinated by the ÂÜÀòÉç’s Analytical Division. On the 17th of February 2017 the University of Wolverhampton are hosting a regional heat. The winner of this heat will compete in the competition final which will be held at Sussex University on the 21st and 22nd of June 2017.
The competition is an opportunity for students to use analytical equipment not usually available in schools, gain additional practical experience and apply their knowledge of chemistry to solve problems. Instructions will be given and students will be supervised but help from staff will be limited to ensure a fair competition. The competition is open to those currently studying AS (year 12) chemistry or equivalent. Each team will consist of 3 students from the same school or college. A maximum of 3 teams are allowed from each school or college.
Prizes (in the form of gift vouchers) will be awarded to individual students and schools whose teams are placed 1st, 2nd or 3rd in this regional heat. Details of prizes can be provided on request.
Event Programme
9.30-10.00 Visitors arrive in MB Foyer
10.00-10.15 Students are provided with PPE (lab coat and safety goggles) and an introductory H&S talk
10.15-13.00 Students will complete practical work in the chemistry laboratory
Teachers will have the opportunity to discuss their outreach requirements with a member of staff from the University of Wolverhampton in a nearby room
13.00-14.00 Lunch (Each visiting student and teacher will be given a £5 lunch voucher to spend on campus)
14.00-14.30 Winners announced and presentation of prizes
14.30 Visitors depart
REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR TEACHERS - please register per team (of 3 students). Schools are limited to registering a maximum of 3 teams. Places are allocated on a first come first served basis. At least one teacher is required to accompany the students from their school or college.
