Future Challenges for Aerospace Fibre Reinforced Composites

7 June 2018 18:00-20:30, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
An evening lecture by Dr David Tilbrook at Hexcel Corporation. 6 pm for a 6.30 pm start.

Over the past 25 years, fibre reinforced composites (FRC) have increasingly displaced metals in certain aerostructures. Modern wide-body aircraft now can contain 50-53% wt FRC. Future single aisle aircraft pose very different challenges. This presentation explores the emerging needs of these opportunities in terms of Materials Chemistry and Composite Technology.

David Tilbrook is currently a Technical Fellow in the Research and Technology department of Hexcel Composites in Duxford. After joining Hexcel in 2000 with a PhD in Polymer Chemistry from University of Surrey and 3 years postdoctoral experience from QMWL, he lead the technical development of a number of aerospace materials, most notably the primary structure composite material for the Airbus A350 XWB aircraft. His research interests include thermoset resin structure property relationships, composite design and manufacture, and molecular modelling.
