Burlington House Summer Late: Resources

27 July 2018 18:00-21:00, London, United Kingdom

Introduction
See the Burlington House Courtyard like never before and discover the six learned societies that reside here.  There is no need to register for this event, please drop in and learn about the Societies with Burlington House.

During this event, visitors will be introduced to our special collections as we explore the resources needed, used and produced as part of each Society’s contribution to the study of art, history and science.

At the ÂÜÀòÉç, discover how chemical scientists are working to find and protect our natural resources on Earth, and find new resources in space with interactive shows and fun hands-on activities.

Meet researchers from Imperial College London who are working to preserve Earth’s resources and explore the new porous materials they are making to capture large amounts of air pollutants. Experiment with different materials to discover which one protects astronauts investigating new resource supplies in space from the effects of harmful UV light.

In our library we will have interactive shows:

Tell me what you eat...
Anna Cupani
18:15 and 19:15

Food is one of our most important resources. Come and hear about the chemistry of food and how your kitchen is one of the most amazing laboratories. Learn how cabbage can turn into a rainbow of colours, why you should always add olive oil to carrots, how tomatoes go from poisonous to delicious and back and why vinegar is great for basically everything. Ever had a disastrous baking experience and want to know why? Come with your recipe and we’ll try and fix it.

Improv sensing, a talk on how to detect anything!
Matthew Partridge
18:45 and 19:45

This is a show where you can learn about the wonders of modern sensing technology and how they are used to find resources, diagnose cancer, track animal migrations or work out which local cat is peeing in your garden. Come shout out suggestions of sensing problems for Matthew to solve live on stage and learn about how important sensors are for almost anything!
