Swansea Chemistry Seminar Program

17 February 2021 16:00-17:00, Swansea, United Kingdom

Introduction
Our next two speakers in our usual seminars (Wednesday 17th  of February 2021, 4 pm) are two Swansea Chemistry  of our PhD students, Saul Michue-Seijas and Edward Duckworth
Below are their abstracts and the Zoom link to attend the talk

Saul Michue-Seijas.
ABSTRACT. Activating the immune system to target cancer cells is one of the most promising and novel therapeutic approaches to combat cancer. It offers the potential for long term protection limiting off-target cytotoxicity in the healthy tissue, which is one the major drawbacks of chemotherapy. However, one of the current challenges is ensuring that the immunomodulatory drugs reach and enter the tumor microenvironment (TME), which not only prevents them from reaching their full potential, but also leads to the off-target collateral damage that causes adverse side effects in many patients. We have demonstrated that safe and effective cancer vaccines can be built around chemically programmed bionanomaterials with intrinsic properties to trigger or activate immunomodulation of the TME, simultaneously acting as accurate delivery vehicles and as imaging agents for immunotherapy tracking and cancer diagnosis.

This research presents the development of biodegradable microneedle and implantable bionanomaterial devices to enhance the delivery of different types of immunomodulatory drugs and anticancer agents and locally control their activity for improved cancer immunotherapy treatments.

Edward Duckworth

ABSTRACT. This is an multi-faceted exploration of the ways vibrational spectroscopy methods can be improved and adapted to make their use viable for clinical diagnosis. There have been may reports espousing diagnostic accuracies higher than currently practiced methods, however none of these have made their way to clinical practice. Throughout this investigation, much of what limits these studies is identified and solutions are suggested and implemented. These solutions range from using spray deposition to eliminate the ‘coffee ring effect’, to refining inconsistencies in methodologies, to correcting fallacies in data analysis methods. Steps are also made to develop some methodological improvements by using machine learning methods, not only for diagnostic classification, but also for machine to machine correction. Furthermore, steps are taken to identify root causes for the spectral biomarkers by using ultrafiltration to limit the molecular weight bands analysed and further investigate the molecules present within them.
