Cancelled: Progress towards an autonomous process chemistry platform

30 July 2024 14:00-15:00, United Kingdom

Introduction
Process Development is a highly resource intensive stage of the pharmaceutical and agrochemical development pipeline. Only around 20% of effort in Process Development is spent on the reactive chemistry; the remaining 80% is spent in optimising work-up procedures such as liquid-liquid extractions, distillations, crystallisations, filtrations, and drying. When failures happen in Process Development, they are mostly in the work-up stage. It is thus imperative to de-risk Process Development to reduce failure costs and remove bottlenecks to products reaching market. Robotics and automation are powerful tools in chemical research, offering increased throughput, improved safety, stronger data protocols, more detailed auditability and, in some cases, improved repeatability. There are a multitude of automation tools available to the laboratory chemist working on small scale synthesis route design and reaction optimisation, however there is a near-total lack of automation solutions for the resource-intensive Process and Control phases. A step-change in experimental approach is required to realise the full potential of new robotic and automation technologies for process chemistry laboratories. This presentation will give an overview of our progress in the development of an autonomous process chemistry platform.
