Why crystals will save the world - a talk on crystal engineering, in-situ analysis and application in chemistry and industry

9 October 2024 17:45-20:45, London, United Kingdom

Introduction

An evening event organised by the South East Regional of the Analytical Community (SERAC) in collaboration with the Kent and Bristol & West Local Sections.

Crystal engineering has evolved to the stage where it offers a mechanism to design the right crystalline material for the right application. This lecture will emphasise how crystal engineering offers a paradigm shift from the more random, high-throughput methods that have traditionally been utilised in materials discovery and development. Crystal engineering has been facilitated by the recent implementation of in situ analysis methods and development of reliable modelling tools. Together they provide key insight into structure-property relationships. Particular emphasis will be placed on a new generation of bespoke crystalline materials that can address global challenges such as carbon capture and water purification (i.e. porous materials) as well as better medicines (i.e. multi-component crystals as drug substances). The lecture will conclude by addressing how the science of crystal engineering might impact patenting of new crystal forms and validity of existing patents.

This will be a hybrid event comprising a live talk at Burlington House for in-person attendees alongside a simultaneous and recorded webinar transmission for online attendees.
A networking session for in-person attendees, with wine coffee and juice, will follow the talk.

This event is free to attend but is for ages 18 or over.  Please register for either the Burlington House or Webinar attendance using the link below:-
